I went to Maryland to visit son, Judd. We went to the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. I about swooned before we even walked through the doors. They are My People. Exterior walls are covered in mirrors. The mirrored Universal Tree of Life by Bob Benson and Rick Ames sparkles outside. Inside, Andrew Logan's mirror and stained glass Icarus turns slowly to rise and fall into a mirrored ocean. Bottle cap art is featured. Outsider art abounds. I've spent much of the last three years not in OK but in the other start-with-a-vowel state, AZ. Hungry Holler survived my absence. Vines in particular took advantage of lax pruning and chopping and tried to cover my shop. They dang near inundated the well house. There are no annuals. Not even rogues. I haven't thrown seed out in several years. Hens and chicks planters need rehabilitation. The peace sign shorted dark. Ma helps me sort glass when I'm mosaicing my mirror artwork suncatchers. We sit across from each other for hours. When I come up for air, sometimes I see her focused like a laser on a pattern of her own. No adhesive. She likes fleeting sparkle. She can start over and over. Other times I look up and she's gone, leaving only her shell, still and quiet. Eyes closed. Ma has hiked off into DementiaLand.
